A chilly wind

Blows in the ghosts

Of Scrooge and Christmas past

Nostalgic tears and empty words

Bonhomie that rarely lasts

Santa clones

Dish out trite words

On every corner of town and street

Jocular and rotund he is not

Ho hum messages as he stops to greet

But, as the world slows down

On that special night

Its magic transcends the coldest heart

Everlasting in its message of hope and peace

That each of us can share a part.

Tantrums and traumas

Teenagers have them all

Tears of hesitation

Unsure of every step

Fear of friends rejection

No time for regret

Make-up and clothes

Shed like skin on the floor

One moment a child in my arms

Emotions on alert, never felt before

Phone calls and Facebook

Secret giggles in the hall

The music of life raps sweetly

A time to try it all

Perfume and denim

Its hard to keep pace

The wingless flight of a cygnet

painted on a childs face

Late nights and parties

The call of the wild

Amid the angst of these changes

You are no longer a child.

No motive no verdict

Just a bouquet of barbed wire

Here is a haiku I wrote while away on my recent mini break by the sea:

I gaze at the sea
it waves to greet me
Dancing on the sand

Never the one at play

The quietest child on the class

With never much to say

Remember as you were growing

Those groups of laughing girls?

No smiles in your direction

You watched afraid, to give life a whirl

And growing up was hard

With no friend by your side

A wall was a good place to lean on

And somewhere you could hide

Always standing in the shadows

And never in the light

Giving up the battle

Without putting up a fight

So in quiet despair

Life slowly passed you by

In wasted years, when the person inside you

Never bothered to question why

Perhaps it was just a fear of flying

Of having to leave the ground

As going up was easy

Just much harder coming down.

Mirrors

Mirrors

Mirrors don’t do anything at all

They just reflect the opposite wall

They see a face

And start to trace

If that something in your eye

Is the look of love

Or just a fly

Who got caught in your lashes

Near your nose

A volcanic blemish grows

Is that blush colouring your face

The rapid spread of a flush

because the room was far too hot

Not so good, in this poor light

“Mirror”, “Please, DO be polite”

You walk away and hear it call

“You look just fine, just fine”,

I am convinced now

Suspended on long plastic stems

Paper shadows dancing in the dark

Each tiny lantern holds a tiny spark

Midlife Crisis

A touch of impulse as
discontent seeps out of every pore
Searching for the meaning of life
I’d never questioned before

Tell me mirror, why this sudden desire
Always catches me unaware,
In the silent whisper of the wind
That becomes a roar, when no one else is there

Yet there was a time in the distant past
When life poured out of my skin
Now that person is a stranger
Full of relentless yearning

I’ve begun to sound like my mother
I even hear her voice within
Perplexed by this unyielding urge
To find freedom before rigamortis sets in

Opportunity calls at the fork in the road
Change direction and run
Drop in, drop out
Grow alfalfa sprouts in the eastern sun

Do or die the fever of Lambada
Flamenco on a table in Spain
Take a risk, throw caution to the wind
Sail into the roaring surf of rain

Mirror, I sense feelings wild and new
Stir the discordant note within
Ride the storm as I journey
And shed this shrunken skin

Elation is almost within my grasp
Its light reflecting in my eyes
For the chrysalis now fully grown
Has just emerged as a butterfly.

written in blood across carpet and wall
emotion on credit that someone must pay for
Love has no consideration at all

it loiters at airports refusing to leave
packed in a suitcase waiting in the hall
farewells bereft of tears and compassion
Love has no consideration at all

crouching in the shadows of riches or squalor
ready to pounce on its victims soul
leaving a sour taste when it kisses no,
Love has no consideration at all

always prepared with lies and excuses
well rehearsed lines when it happens to call
when you think that you don't really need it unheeded,
Love has no consideration at all

it plays its loudest tunes unrehearsed
crowding floors unmoved by Bach or rock n' roll
Love writes the notes to its own music
so play on maestro, for

My Haiku Notebook

I love writing Haiku, but eventually I end up with loads of scraps of paper with my scribbles, and then they tend to get lost or buried in my desk. So, lighbulb on... I found this delightful notebook and am now pasting each haiku in as I write them. I thought it an excellent idea!! I loved the butterfly on the cover too.

Haiku - One Deep Breath - Frost

Frost bites hard
with teeth of jagged glass
in winters chill.

The prompt for this week is 'frost'. Seeing as we are in the middle of a seering hot summer here, its hard to stretch the imagination that far, and imagine a frosty day, which we don't even have in winter over here.
But my years of livingin the UK have served me well and I remember things like chillblains, antifreeze in the car, and other frost related memories! So with that in mind, here's my effort.
